The latest statistics show that 1 out of 144 children
have autism (up from 1 out of 10,000 just two decades ago).
In my house, 1 out of 2 children has autism. My 8 year old Ryan.
Three years ago, Ryan was diagnosed
with Asperger's disorder, part of the Autism Spectrum. He often experiences sensory overload, where certain sounds and images of TV and radio causes his brain to malfunction. We would often find him huddled in our closet, screaming uncontrollably, and frightened beyond belief. Normal everyday sounds are "fingernails being scratched on a chalkboard" to an autistic child.
Fun activities that most people take for granted, like bringing yourfamily to restaurants for dinner or going on airplane rides, were all but impossible for us. We often lost hope.
However, that soon changed when we found a school know as the Pioneer Learning Center. It is a school specifically that helps with children on the autism spectrum including Asperger's, ADD, and other social integration disorders. You see, many public schools are ill-equipped to handle the influx of autistic children that is occurring in this country, and around the world. I could tell you story after story how the school has "rescued" children, really good kids that the public schools said they could no longer handle.
These Schools Make a Difference, and So Can You
We need schools like Pioneer. In San Diego, a city of close to 3 million, we are one of the only nonprofit schools that is devoted to educating autistic, Asperger's and other children with special needs, ensuring they can become the capable productive men and women that they so can be.
However. for this non-profit school to survive, and for other schools like it to survive in other cities, it relies completely on financial contributions.
And that's how "Marketers on a Mission" was born.
